With the maelstrom of the latest releases in Venice and Toronto, we had forgotten a bit the next film by Xavier Dolan: The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. According to the young Canadian director, the movie is not presented in Cannes next year because the filming will continue in the spring and will not end until June 2017:

The Playlist: Xavier Dolan Says He Won’t Be Taking ‘John F. Donovan’ To Cannes

“I don’t think I’d present a film like this at Cannes,” the director told the Montreal Gazette. “It’s a film about an American TV star who is framed by the American media system. There are bits in it that are so much like what I lived in Cannes, and I’m afraid that people would think it’s my revenge project. Except that I wrote it five years ago (with Jacob Tierney).”

In addition to Dolan’s concerns about going to Cannes with the movie, it’s an open question as to whether or not ‘Donovan’ will be ready for next year. Filming was originally scheduled to wrap in November, but instead, the production (which the director has called “stressful”) that started this summer will go on hiatus and resume next spring.

And here’s a weekly ration of tidbits for all of you…

-First of all, it seems that The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, the latest film by Xavier Dolan, has already shooting date. According to Le Journal de Quebec, the film will begin shooting on July 9, and will be located in Montreal, New York, Prague and London.

Since the filming of Annihilation would be between June and August, probably the Natalie part in the Dolan movie does not begin until August (at least). If the shooting is in several cities, it´s likely to be thereby.

-The premiere of A Tale of Love and Darkness in Poland took place yesterday, and a few interviews have emerged because of it. The first is an interview with Natalie (in Polish), where she describes the challenges in making this film:

“A story of love and darkness” delighted readers not only in Israel. It’s most read book in the world Israel. You decide to just devote so important moment of your life, which is the directorial debut. What did you find it?

It is in this book so many topics! It was for me a powerful source of inspiration. This story has many different layers. There is and a great story, and a very special family triangle – mother, father and son. It is love for the language and a celebration of words, which I really love. There is also saved the moment in which was born the Hebrew language, and it was unique in the world. In magically we managed to bring back to life virtually dead language. Resurrect him. This whole book is amazing and on many levels.

Natalie’s busy schedule shows no signs of slowing down as it has been announced that she will be in Xavier Dolan’s next film, alongside Jessica Chastain, Kit Harrington, Susan Sarandon, Taylor Kitsch, Kathy Bates, Thandie Newton and Nicholas Hoult. Xavier is a bit of a prodigy, having been recognized at Cannes as a 19 year old filmmaker. He has been prolific and this film, titled The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, will be his first English language film.

You might remember Natalie was spotted with Xavier at Cannes last year.

I have always wanted to catch up with his work but haven’t found the time. Now I have a good excuse. Oh, but almost everyone has seen him direct as he filmed Adele’s music video for Hello.

This is further evidence of a new strategy to work with some of the most talented and exciting young directors around.

Planetarium sees Natalie working with Rebecca Zlotowski, fresh off her highly acclaimed second film, Grand Central.
Annihilation will have Natalie working with Alex Garland, whose first film Ex Machina is considered one of the best sci-fi films in years.
Jackie has Natalie working with Pablo Larrain, who is the most experienced although his string of critical successes have come outside the Hollywood system. His new film The Club was nominated for a Golden Globe and already has 14 awards to its name.
And On The Basis of Sex was due to be directed by Marielle Heller, who has one brilliant film to her name, Diary of a Teenage Girl.

Xavier Dolan makes that five different nationalities but here is the really interesting part – all five are writer-directors.

View the synopsis after the jump.
