Today, members of our @iwillharness community joined Susan Burton, @anewwayoflifela, and Harness ally @natalieportman to visit the Century Regional Detention Facility – the women’s unit of the Los Angeles County jail in Lynwood. We attended this visit to bear witness, hear the stories of women incarcerated there, and to recommit ourselves to the fight for criminal justice reform. • L.A. County spends $50,000 per incarcerated person per year. Between 2010 and 2016, LA County spent $751 billion dollars on the confinement of women alone. At some point during their lives, 90% of incarcerated women were victims of sexual or physical violence. Often, those circumstances and their need to fight for their lives led to their imprisonment. Instead of incarcerating them, let's give them a new chance at life. • Susan Burton’s amazing organization, A New Way of Life, proves that public resources are better invested in transformation than punishment. ANWOL provides housing and services for 1/3 of what it costs L.A. County to incarcerate someone. A New Way of Life reminds us that every person has inherent value. Today, we visited two of their homes available to recently incarcerated women, which provide women a place where they feel safe, are met with compassion, and assisted in finding a job, an education, and a support community. • Join us in supporting A New Way of Life by donating to their life-affirming work online at www.anewwayoflife.org and by attending their annual gala on December 8.
