There is no doubt that Natalie’s shade during the award for best director at the Golden Globes has been one of the most commented moments these last two days. There have been all kinds of reactions, mostly positive, highlighting the audacity of the moment, but she has also been accused of being unnecessarily rude to the honored directors that night. Whatever the opinions on it, it´s obvious that it has served to generate debate about the lack of representation of women directors in the industry. Greta Gerwig was asked about it in “The View” this morning:
Steven Spielberg, one of the nominees at the Golden Globes, and Patty Jenkins, were asked about the matter by Entertainment Tonight last night:
Also, Guillermo del Toro, the winner of the award last Sunday, showed his support for Natalie’s message, in an email sent to IndieWire:
“I think it was great!” he wrote. “She should say exactly what she feels. There is phenomenal work being done by female directors.” He singled out several awards season contenders from women directors, adding that “’Mudbound,’ ‘Lady Bird’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ are all terrific.”
Maybe we can see a female director nominated at the Oscars in the coming weeks? We’ll see…
