A couple days ago a new Natalie interview appeared in The Independent and in the most interesting passage she explains how her criticism of right-wing politics in Israel was kept in check when she was younger due to a strategy of “fear-mongering”. She now feels that the Jewish community should at least be openly discussing how much prominence the Holocaust is given, when it is at the expense of other injustices in the world.
Here is an excerpt about a realization on a trip to Rwanda in 2007.
“We went to the museum there, and I was shocked that that [genocide] was going on while I was in school. We were learning only about the Holocaust and it was never mentioned and it was happening while I was in school.”
The general point is that of having more empathy for more people, but of course the headlines out there have been more along the lines of “Natalie Portman says ‘shut up’ about the Holocaust”. It feels like just the other day she was being called a Zionist and now she’s apparently an anti-Semite.
