Natalie is interviewed in the upcoming Red Magazine and they have a portion of the interview up online. There are some interesting quotes, particularly in relation to her directing A Tale of Love and Darkness, which leads into this quote about the lack of female directors in the industry.
‘Not fewer males, just more females,’ she says firmly. ‘I love male stories, you know, they help me see the world in different ways. But we need more opportunities for women. I don’t think it’s that fewer women want to direct, because in film schools there are equal numbers of men and women. I think there are institutional biases against women that don’t allow for them to have as many opportunities, or are as comfortable with them being in leadership roles. It’s different with different cultures, too. In France, for example the new generation of directors of my age is, I’d say, more women than men.’
